The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress, affectionately known as the "BUFF" (Big Ugly Fat Fellow), was developed to serve as a long-range, heavy bomber for the United States Air Force. Its purpose was to provide a strategic nuclear deterrent and conventional bomb delivery capability during the Cold War. The B-52's massive size and distinctive design is quite menacing in appearance. With a wingspan of 185 feet (56 meters) and a length of over 160 feet (49 meters), the Stratofortress is a true behemoth of the skies. Its eight engines are mounted in four twin pods under the wings, giving it a unique and imposing look. The B-52 has a storied history of service. It has been used in various conflicts, including the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, the Bosnian War, and the Kosovo War. In the 1991 Gulf War, B-52s flew from Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean and even from the mainland United States to strike targets in Iraq. The aircraft has also been used in more recent conflicts, such as the Afghanistan War and the air campaign against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). Throughout its service life, the B-52 has been continuously upgraded and modified to meet changing operational needs. The Dassault Mirage IIIC was developed as a single-seat, all-weather interceptor, intended to serve as a high-speed, high-altitude fighter for the French Air Force. It was the first production model of the Mirage III family, and its purpose was to provide a capable and versatile aircraft for air defense and interception roles. The Mirage IIIC is sexy sleek, with delta-wing design which gives it a distinctive waisted profile that contributed to its aerodynamic efficiency. The Mirage IIIC was powered by a SNECMA Atar 09B turbojet engine, which provided a top speed of Mach 2.2, making it one of the fastest fighters of its time. The Mirage IIIC saw extensive service with the French Air Force, as well as with several other air forces around the world. The aircraft played a significant role in the Six-Day War in 1967, where it was used by the Israeli Air Force to great effect.
